J Is For Justification

A-Z Challenge 2012

J is for Justification

Now I don't feel that I have to justify to anyone why we choose to live the way we do, however on numerous occasions I have had to which does upset me a wee bit!

We simply chose to live in a caravan because it worked out financially better for us. We are both in our mid 40's have both come from failed relationships with nothing to show for it.

We were renting a 3 bedroom house in the middle of the historic town of Shaftesbury in Dorset, but the cost of running the house was starting to cripple us.

How could we save for our own place whilst all our money was going to pay bills?

We both believe that life is for living, waiting till you retire to relax and do the things you want to do is total nonsense. You may never get there!

So we sold up, lock stock the f***ing lot and moved out! Best thing we ever did.

Mind you, some of our friends and family thought we were crazy! Why would you want to do that? Your going to be a gypsy! You will never survive like that. These were often heard.

Now that we have been full timing for 20 months some of them have changed their tunes and have come to realise that this wasn't such a daft idea after all!

But there is always one that has a major problem with our lifestyle. In fact she is totally embarrassed that we live like this! Only recently she has suggested that we move to a static caravan as it would only cost £150 per week to rent!!! This does not include any bills etc, so you can add on another £400 a month easily!

Why would we do that when we only spend a max of approx £400 per month to do what we do!! She just does not understand or get it at all.

Even to the point of suggesting that in a couple of years time the housing market might allow us to buy a house! OK, so where does the £40k deposit come from, and why the hell would I still be wanting to pay a mortgage when I'm 70! Live next door to folk who may be complete pains in the arse, and have to put up with the noise.

No, living like this suits me just fine thankyou!

We have a plan, to buy land, infact, several pieces of land, turn them into small 5 pitch sites, and live on them till we find a suitable piece of land where we can build our own eco-house. This way, we can build up a income from the sites for our retirement and have somewhere to live.

Mind you, the thought of the open road does appeal when time and finances allow!

So having to justify why we do this does get a little tiresome to say the least, especially when it is close family. But what can you do to those who refuse to listen and be a little bit more open minded?

Nothing, just let them get on with it. I must say when ever we go to their house it's always bloody freezing, not like that in our caravan, we can afford to crank the heating up! So we do have the last laugh all be it silently!

Till later............

  3. I haven't done what you are doing, and have no plans to do so, BUT ...

I admire your choices, am open to the possibilities, would try it if my spouse was at all handy .... you get the idea.

There are many ways of living your life ... and you get only one "go around" so do it your own way. There is no one right way of doing anything in this universe!

    Great post.

  4. I think it's great what you are doing. There is nothing wrong with what you are doing. There is a lot of logic to what you say and if you and yours are happy then no one has the right to judge your life and you shouldn't have to justify. Follow your happiness.

  5. I'm stopping in from the A to Z challenge, and I must say this is probably my favorite post I have found so far. This post very much reminds me of the parts of Into the Wild (the movie, not the book, the book is fairly different) where Chris meets Jan and Wayne. It's so exciting to hear about people living life on their own terms.

I'm definitely one of your new followers =)
